Are you loving staying home so much with your dog? I know I am. Spending 24/7 together is a dream come true for me and my pup. But (isn’t there always a but…), I know that all this together time will come to an end when I finally get to get back to working away from home. And, I also know that all this together time might be setting my dog up to suffer from separation issues when I do start leaving her home alone more. So I am taking steps now to prevent those separation issues, and I urge you to do the same. Here are things you can do.
Foster independence at home. Have your dog in another room while you do a Zoom meeting (I’m doing that a lot these days). Give your dog a great chew bone in the yard while you get a few chores done inside. Give your puppy a stuffed Kong in the kennel while you talk on the phone in another room
Step outside often without your dog. Get the mail, go into the garage to do laundry, walk around the outside of your house. You could even take a brief walk around the block without your pup (I know—walking without the dog is just wrong!).
Go out at least a few times a week without your dog. That might mean leaving her home when you get groceries, gas up your car, or go on another essential activity errand.
And, if you are having trouble with separation problems, feel free to get in touch for help.
